Felt Gingerbread House Applique

I made this Gingerbread applique using eco-fi felt.
Eco-fi felt is mad
e using recycled plastic bottles by the Kunin Group.
It's machine washable, fade-resistant and won't fray.
You can also
iron it and it won't shrink or melt.
You'd think it would melt since a
fter all, it is made from plastic bottles.
But nope - it won't!
When I read all that about eco-fi felt, I thought it would be excellent for t-shirt appliques.

I made Serenity's pretty Gingerbread house applique based on this one from Cole's Corner and Creations.
I sewed the rick-rack, buttons, and door onto the house before creating the applique.
I used some no-sew Heat 'n Bond to make an applique out of the house, roof and the little heart.
Then I just iron it all to the shirt on medium heat - no steam.

Instead of sewing, you could embroidery all kinds of pretty embellishments on the Gingerbread house before turning it into an applique.
The roof would look pretty with sequins sewn on or glitter added.
There are so many creative possibilities with this project!

It took me around 30 minutes to complete - easy!
And pretty cheap too!
I paid $4.99 for Serenity's shirt at Target.
The eco-fi felt is around 35¢ at Wal-Mart and as you can see, I didn't use all that much to make the applique.
I used buttons and some Heat 'n Bond I already had, and about three inches of rick-rack.

Total price?
Less than $5.50!

How cute would this be for Christmas presents?

Happy Holidays!

Peppermint Tree

You've seen one of these before right? It's so easy to make! I did this one the other day, but it didn't come out quite like I wanted it to because I used the wrong kind of peppermints (they've got Brach's written all over them for gosh's sakes!) and pins (mine were way to short!). But I plan to try again, hopefully my second tree will look better than my first one!

Materials needed:
Styrofoam cone
Peppermints
Pins

This project is so simple, so that makes it perfect to do with your Darling Stinkers. And really very cheap to make too - less than a $1.

Basically, you just pin the peppermints to the cone in rows, starting at the bottom. Space them out as evenly as possible, and try to keep the wrapper twists hidden.

All done! I used the Mini Bowdabra to made a bow for the top and a little satin flower I got from Wal-Mart. It's best if you don't look too closely at my Peppermint tree - that way you can't see all the mistakes!! Oh! And pretend you don't see Brach's stamped all over the tree! That's why this project is perfect for kids - they won't care about all the little details!

There are all kinds of embellishments you can do with this too.

Get a little terra cotta pot, paint it Christmasy colors, and "plant" your little peppermint tree in the pot. Put a little bit of Styrofoam in the pot, poke one end of a wooden dowel in the bottom of the peppermint tree and the other end into the pot. Decorate the top of the pot with felt, or some other materiel to hid the Styrofoam, and add tiny presents under the tree.

Hmm... I might try that one next!

You can also add bells, glitter, and spray paint the cone a pretty Christmasy color.

Tons of possibilities!

Happy Holidays!

GWMG: A New Beginning!

We started all over with the Grow With Me Gift! Our paperwhites never flowered - they never popped outta the pods. It was okay - the whole point of the activity is to spend time with your child and share with them the fun of growing plants! And we did!

Kim was kind enough to send us some more bulbs though when she heard - how sweet! So we've started again - and Serenity was thrilled! I can't say it enough - this is a wonderful activity to do with your pre-schooler. It's something they can actually do pretty much by themselves - and that's a big thing. Serenity is so proud of her plant!

We used Serenity's pretty jewels and the vase that held mints at her birthday party. She kept saying, "It beautiful Mommy"!

Don't forget to go check out Grow With Me Gifts' Facebook fan page! And remember to buy your own kit

HERE!

POST-IT-NOTE: BTW, if you're wondering what that thing Serenity is standing in is - it's called the Learning Tower by Little Partners. It's probably one of the best purchases I've ever made! Now it comes in a million different colors that they didn't have when I got it! Awww! With it, Serenity can reach the counter and I don't have to worry about her falling off the bar stools. It's very well-made in the USA with good solid wood - no cheap particle board! It has some of the best reviews on Amazon too! You can get two cool accessories to go with the tower, a play-house kit and an art easel!

Below is a picture Serenity drew of our family that I'd like to share with y'all. It's the very first one that she has drawn
all of us together, so of course it's very special to me. Her people are evolving too - they used to look more like potatoes. This is the first time I've seen her draw them this way! It's so cool to watch how she learns and does new stuff!

Can you guess who is who?!

POST-IT-NOTE 2: Well, yeah! That's another dress from courtneycourtney - of course!!

Felt Tortelloni Pasta and Tin

This is a very easy and cheap, no sew felt food tutorial!
I've never actually made real tortelloni pasta , so to learn how to fold it I used a wonderful picture pasta shaping tutorial over at a yummy cooking blog called Palachinka.

Nice!

Tortelloni Supplies:
(makes 12)
1 piece of 9"w
x 12"l dark yellow craft felt cut into 12 3"x3" squares
hot glue gun & glue stick
12 cotton balls

Turn the felt square so it looks like a diamond. Roll a cotton ball between your hands until it's a little oval-ish, place it in the center of the diamond. Put a dot of glue on the top corner of the felt. Fold until the corners meet and pinch until the glue sets. Your piece will be triangle-shaped now. To close the triangle, add a thin line of hot glue along the inside of both sides.

Pinch it closed until the glue sets. Now fold the bottom of the triangle up, leaving a a small triangle-size "point". While holding the fold in place, reposition your fingers like in the third picture, pinch the sides and curl them around your finger to bring the ends in the front.

Place a dot of glue on one side of the tortelloni, then lay the edge of the other side on top. Pinch until the glue sets. All done! Now it's time to make the tin!

Tin Supplies:
Maxwell House tin (recycled!)
Mod Podge
card stock paper (I used 2 index sized pieces)
glue stick & paint brush

Measure width of the tin and cut the paper. Apply the glue to the tin.

Put the paper on the tin starting at the tin's seam. Apply a thin layer of Mod Podge.
That's it! Let it dry completely before touching it.

All done!!
Look how cute the pasta looks in the tin!
These would make great stocking stuffers for your Darling Stinker, Christmas and Birthday presents too.

Bethany was a HUGE help making the pasta and the tins while I took pictures.
Thank you Bethy!!

This is an awesome project to do with your kids and costs next to nothing to make.
It didn't cost me a penny since I had everything I already needed on hand.

POST-IT-NOTE:

Serenity's peas and carrots are from the Learning Resources. They have some of the best play food I've ever seen - very durable and realistic! Serenity has a whole set for her kitchen. In case you were wondering, I don't show the lids for the tins 'cause I didn't want them in the picture, but I still have them.

Tagliatelle noodles:
I modeled these after the ones from Haba
They are $12 on Amazon!
So for around 35¢, I bought 1 piece of light brown 9"w x 12"l eco-fi felt at Wal-Mart.

Then to make them, all I did was cut one inch off the length of the felt piece, then cut it into 1/2"w x 11"l strips.

They are the same length as the Haba ones and I just guesstimated on the width.

I ended up with 18 {whole wheat} tagliatelle noodles.
Not bad for 35¢!

POST-IT-NOTE 2
I would like give a HUGE thank you to Ruffles and Stuff and Someday Crafts and One Pretty Thing and Friend Stitch (I hope I got that right!) and Craft Gossip and Monster-Arkivet (I hope I got that one right too!) and Palachinka, and Bobbityboo, and Totally Tutorials and a-tutto-zigzago for linking this post!

Happy Holidays!

Dijon Chicken

I found a very simple Dijon Chicken recipe over at one of my favorite blogs, Little Birdie Secrets.
It sounded so good, I just had to try it!

Delicious!

I added just a little extra - I couldn't resist!
A few dashes of Tony C's and about a 1/2 cup of "Holy Trinity" - perfect.

This yummy dish was easy, quick and cheap to cook up.
What could be better?!
If you already have the Dijon mustard, then it'll only cost about $8 and serve 4-5 people.

Not too shabby, huh?!

And it's been kid-tested too!
Bethany and Serenity liked it!
WooHoo!!

Thank you Little Birdie Secrets!

Happy Holidays!

Who Dat?

The Saints are 11-0 baby!
And that's about all I know about football - if the Saints are winning or not.
Oh wait! I know that Drew Brees is on the team and he's a Quarterback.
I know
that because I bought a Brees jersey for my cousin last year for Christmas - she told me!

This year the Saints are playing the best they ever have and everyone down here is so siked up!
My husband watches every week, of course - I don't 'cause I think it's
bor-ing!
Sorry I can't help it, but I am really proud that they are doing so great - isn't that weird?!

Soooo... anywho,

Serenity has a darling little Saints cheerleader outfit she got last year and I wanted her to have a bracelet to match - especially when I saw the custom made cheerleader beads over at threemoonbabies!

~This shot is from last year - I need to get a 2009
one!~

BTW, do you see her toes hanging off the front of her shoes?
I swear she jumped from a size 4 to a size 6 overnight!
One day these shoes fit her and the next - her toes are hanging.
I didn't even notice until I was looking at the pictures on the computer later that day.
Is that funny or what?!
Believe it or not, but she still fits most size 6's.
I'm going to cry a river when she outgrows all her pretty shoes I've collected for her this past year!

and we're back...

Naturally, the main focus of the bracelet is the sweet little Saints cheerleader bead from
threemoonbabies.
I sent Marjorie a picture of Serenity wearing her Saints cheerleader outfit, and she created a pretty bead that looks just like her!
The bead has a bow in it's hair like Serenity's too!

Aww sha - how sweet is dat?!

I also used sterling silver findings and Swarovski topaz crystals and white pearls I bought from Firemoutain Gems and Beads years ago.
I can't remember what kind beads the black ones are - but they have a very nice solid, uniform color.

When I get a newer picture of Serenity wearing her Saints bracelet and cheerleader outfit, I'll post it here!

POST-IT-NOTE: It snowed here last night!! Uh, yea - you read that right! It was very light, and it melted as soon as it touched the ground - but it was most definitely snow! Is that crazy or what?!

Happy Holidays!

Princess Tiana Bracelet

I made these Princess Tiana bracelets for Serenity and her BFF, Cobee Lynn today.
Once upon a time, I used to make children's bracelets, but I stopped because I wasn't selling all that many - there is so much competition out there!
{sigh}
Anyways, it's been a few years since I've made one, but I'm really satisfied with how these turned out.

Time to make more?
Hmmm...

Aren't the Princess Tiana beads and the little frogs the sweetest?! I custom ordered them from threemoonbabies over at Etsy.
Marjorie is an awesome artist and this is the second order I've made with her - and I plan to make more!
My first order was this pretty castle switch plate for Serenity's room.

I also custom ordered a pretty Saints cheerleader bead with my Princess Tiana order too.
You can see a picture of it on threemoonbabies Flickr photostream here.
I plan to make another bracelet for Serenity with it.
While you're at Flickr, check out Marjorie's other beads and creations!

You can custom order a cheerleader bead for your little one over at her Etsy store too.
Marjorie welcomes custom orders and her customer service is the best!
She's so helpful and affordable!

Don't forget to have a look at threemoonbabies' blog too!
Right now she has a post up with some of her cool beads on necklaces - her pretty little Darling Stinker is modeling them - awww!!

SIX more days until The Princess and the Frog hits the theaters!!

Happy Holidays!

Ruffles & Stuff

I recently stumbled across the cutest blog called Ruffles & Stuff owned by the very talented Disney. She shares a ton of ideas, links to awesome blogs and wonderful pictures - especially the ones of her adorable little girl!

Today Disney featured my Child's Apron Using a Dishtowel & Potholder tute. I love how she put it in her sidebar - I wonder if it would be okay if I borrowed that idea?! You can check out all of her previously featured ideas and tutorials here too.

Disney's newest post is of a pink and brown Christmas tree made from felt and cotton fabric for her daughter to decorate. She made ornaments for the tree out of ribbon and felt. It's so creative and a great way for your little one to decorate their very own Christmas tree - over and over!

Just the other day Serenity was asking me for a Christmas tree to put in her room (has your child asked you for one too?) - a felt & fabric tree like over at Ruffles & Stuff would be perfect for her!

Happy Holidays!

Serenity LOVES Princess Tiana!

Serenity's Disney Princess Tiana nightgown and doll came in today.
They are both on sale right now, but the doll has sold out!

Of course Serenity was thrilled to get them!
She hasn't put the doll down since I gave it to her.

Both the gown and the doll are very well made and so pretty!
The doll is soft and cuddly and the fabric on her dress shimmers.

So does the fabric on the nightgown.
It's a size 2/3 and a little long on Serenity,
but I plan to take it in near the shoulders so she's not stepping on the hem so much.

Lately, all I've been hearing from Serenity is Princess Tiana this and Princess Tiana that.
She talks about seeing the movie, reading the book, and of course
getting anything remotely related to Princess Tiana!
So she was very excited when she saw her doll and nightgown.

She lit up like a Christmas tree!
And that makes me smile too!

TEN more days until The Princess and the Frog hits the theaters!!

Happy Holidays!
